“The promotion of Gender Equality at all levels of operation and all aspects of the academic life of the Athens University of Economics and Business is an important dimension of the University’s Social Responsibility. The actions and structures for Gender Equality at the AUEB aim to inform and sensitise its academic community about its paramount importance and to fully integrate Gender Equality into the University’s operations. Through these structures and actions, the AUEB seeks to further improve the already high level of academic and research staff, to create additional research opportunities and, ultimately, to fully establish a culture of equality and equity.”

The Rector, Professor Dimitrios Bourantonis

Gender Equality at the Athens University of Economics and Business is part of Goal 5 “Gender Equality” of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

The structure and function of AUEB’s GEO

The GEO at AUEB is materialised through the cooperation of TARGETED-MPI and the Gender Equality Committee. Since 2022, the GEO consists of the TARGETED-MPI research team and the members of the GEC. On several occasions the GEO has cooperated with the Women’s Forum at AUEB. The plan is for the GEO to continue to operate after the end of TARGETED-MPI, as a cooperation between the GEC and a research project funded by AUEB-RC. So far funds have been secured for the years 2025 and 2026. Furthermore, the Ministry of Education has committed to finance the implementations of GEPs of all GECs/GEOs of HEIs in Greece; the call for proposals will be out by the end of 2024. All this means that the financing of GEO activities will secure the sustainability of the GEO.

AUEB’s GEO members and expertise

The GEO aims at being a best practice structure at AUEB, by implementing GEPS and serving as a best practice benchmark across B&M schools and all HEIs across Greece. Furthermore the GEO at AUEB is interested in gathering information on GE knowledge and good practice, which will include tools for gender-inclusive actions, as well as acting as a repository for articles and papers on GE in research institutions. The GEO comprises six members;

  • Professor Eleni Apospori, TARGETED-MPI PI and coordinator and former GEC chair; she is an expert in GEP design, planning and implementation, data collection and analysis, and gender and career research.
  • Associate Professor Irene Nikandrou who is current GEC chair and an expert in volunteer development and organisation.
  • Dr Mariangela Trompeta an expert researcher on the gender dimension in research and on sexual harassment.
  • Ms Kyriaki Karydou an expert researcher on gender and dissemination and communication. Ms Karydou is also a PhD candidate; her thesis is on GEP implementation issues.
  • Mr Stathis Katopodis an activist and expert researcher on gender, marketing and (digital) communication.
  • Ms Jenny Melachroinou an activist and expert researcher on gender issues and volunteerism.

The members of the GEO at AUEB have extensive expertise in gender equality planning and implementation, as well as in establishing a very rich Knowledge Hub on Gender Equality.

Upcoming GEO events

AUEB is planning to organise an activity in 2025, most probably in early March to celebrate the International Women’s Day.
