Professor Apsopori, also the President of the Gender Equality Committee at AUEB and the Principal Researcher in the TARGETED-MPI project, engaged in a compelling conversation with Maria Gkasouka, distinguished Professor in Folklore and Gender at the Department of Preschool Education Sciences and Educational Design at the AEGEAN University. The discussion unfolded with a keen historical perspective, dissecting sexism in language and exploring the reasons that compelled feminists to address this issue.

The dialogue not only shed light on the existence of sexism in language but also served as a call to action for fostering an academic environment of equality and inclusion for all genders. It provided a comprehensive overview of the challenges, including difficulties in implementing gender-neutral language in Greek and the androcentrism prevalent in academia. The conversation also touched upon potential solutions, emphasizing the power of raising awareness and creating tailored educational programs.

Episode 4: Women in the Workplace

In the subsequent episode, Professor Apsopori welcomed Maria Karamesini, Professor of Labor Economics and Social Policy at Panteion University. The conversation navigated through the intricate elements contributing to the gender inequality landscape in the workplace. Topics such as unpaid labor and the exclusion of women with lower and moderate educational backgrounds were scrutinized, unraveling the theoretical approaches, including disaggregated data, that aid our understanding of the problem.

Listeners were confronted with stark realities, as the podcast uncovered the unequal treatment of women in the workforce, especially for those working under the radar of the law, part time and in lower positions. The episode emphasized issues beyond the wage gap. We learned that Greek women face complex layers of gender inequality in the workplace, including deeply rooted gender and implicit bias by top leadership, challenges on maternity leaves, and work-life balance guided by deeply rooted patriarchal symptoms.
